Tomorrow’s the last day you can register to vote. It would
be totally hypocritical of me to tell you to all go out and register, because
I’m not voting. Yes, you read that right. I. Am. Not. Voting. I have a lot of
reasons, including not feeling like I know enough about the candidates to make
an educated decision, knowing that because of where I live my vote doesn’t
count in the grand scheme, and a few others. I don’t want to discourage anyone
from voting if they want to, it’s just not something I feel the need to do.
I remember when I turned 18, I couldn’t wait to vote. Of
course my birthday is in January, so I had a while to wait. November creeped up
on me and I didn’t register. It was just a local election that year so it
didn’t seem like a huge deal. I was going to school in Logan but spending weekends
and summers in Syracuse. Neither place really felt like “my city.” Same thing
happened last year. And this year, well, I just don’t care.
Whenever I tell people this, I get the typical lecture “if
you don’t vote, you can’t complain.” It’s justifiable, but in Utah, where
everyone knows that the electoral votes are going to Romney, does my vote
really count? It’s not like the people in charge really listen anyways.
I guess a lot of this is because I’m not really aware of
what’s going on. Basically if it isn’t on the MSN homepage or affecting
something I really care about, I don’t know. I feel like being in college is
like living in a bubble. Maybe I’ll register when I’m living in the “real
world.” Until then, I’m not going to get too worked up about the whole thing.
What are your thoughts on voting? Are you going to?
